When the class ended, I heard Prof and the tutors were saying something like, "I'll see you online!" At first, I got confused of what they were talking about, until the next day, I finally understood what was it all about.

When I was still roaming around, having my own sweet moment at the beginning of the semester, I did not realize that one of the tutors, Miss Ng, had actually given the instructions for the first assignment online. Until the next morning, I got a text message from my friends only i know about the sudden assignment. I got all tensed up knowing that I was so left out. When I got online, looking at the people who had already register themselves into different groups. Withoug delaying, I finally got myself a group too.

In this case, I have learned that I have to be alert all the time so that I would. This is very important as that enables me finish the task given.

My Soft Skills

Through out the whole course, I realized that I have developed some soft skills within myself.

Team work - Through the group based assignments, I learned to share with group members. We arranged meetings so that we could sit down together as a group and monitor each others' work. There we share our mind. We gave constructive opinions and comments to each others so that all the work could be improved. When one has found out something, other group members would be given the knowledge too. Here, we share our knowledge. Well, being in a group means sharing .

critical thinking - This was needed when I had to think of the way to come out with interesting activities, which must be done with Smart Board. I had to crack my head to think how I could create activities that the use of Smart Board in the activity was not able to be replaced by a normal white board and also the way that I could make full use of the features of Smart Board to make the interactive white board. At the same time I had to consider the element of "interactive activities". By catering to those aspects at the same time, I had to use critical thinking in order to come out with the solution, hence, from there my critical thinking skill was developed.

Life Long Learning - Life long learning is important. There were something that we thought we already know, but then in the end, we would find that there would be more for us to find out! For instance, looking at the Smart Board Software, after going through the training, I thought I had roughly mastered the functions of Smart Board. Unexpectedly, as i went along, I eventually discovered more and more new functions of it! Hence, learning does not stop but go on from time to time.

Communication - I learned to communicate with the others better. Before this I always liked to work on my own as I thought that would save the hassle going around to discuss with group members. I always wanted to be the lone ranger while doing assignment. Things are different now. After working together with the others, I found that it wasnt that difficult to communicate with others at all. Through the group discussion, I learned on the way to communicate as in I learned the way to convey my ideas better avoiding miscommunication and misunderstanding.

Ethics and values - I learned to do handle my work professionally, in terms of producing something with good quality as a teacher. Looking at the task from a teacher's point of view, I had produced my work which are related to the primary curriculum.

Leadership Skill - I developed this skill when I had to handle the presentation. For instance, when my product was chosen to be presented, I had to brief everyone about how we were to go on with the preparation and presentation. There, I learned to be a leader as I had to closely monitor the preparation and presentation as I was the one who know my product the best.

Entrepreneurship - I think it was the fast pace of the class that got me developed some quality of entrepreneur. As entrepreneur, one has to be sharp, efficient, creative and accurate. Well, those are the quality developed when I was trying to complete the assignment.

Classroom Vs Chatroom

Yesterday was a quite exciting day as Prof had just turn the our "classroom" to a "chatroom"! =P
It was the first time that we were chatting in the class "legally" though. Haha. Well, let's be serious now. It was fun to chat in the class though, but i personally feel that the chatters must be very well disciplined, only the chat room can serve its true purpose.
From my personal experience, When I had just got into the chat room, i was just too excited knowing that we could chat in the classroom, until there was one point that i had forgotten the point that Prof asked us to go into chatroom!
However, I think that the idea of chatting is still applicable some how, with good supervision. Not only the teachers can chat, even pupils can chat too. I believe that one day the classrooms are going to turn to somewhere well equipped with computers and some other high-tech stuffs. By that time, computer might be something outdated already, well, who knows? =P
For teachers, this concept is good though. It would be nice if the teachers start going online and chat. Just like some other chat engines, we need somewhere which there are teacher chatting 24 hours! :D there teachers are free to share their ideas with others. Problems too can be discussed. I believe that with the mind of thousands millions of teachers, nothing is impossible! :D A chat room like this for the teachers should be very cosy, i believe :)

Fishie in the class :D

On last Wednesday, Prof started the class with a different kind of opening. It was rather interesting that she actually brought some fish toys to the class for us to play. When she started to throw the fish around, all of us got excited and played around with the toys too. That's how we were introduced to the "FISH!" Philosophy.
After reading the articles, I understood that this is something that might help us in class management. Being a skill to create inspiration, creativity and innovation, FISH! would definitely be a good choice for the teachers to understand and apply in their teaching life. This philosophy is amazing as it can create a lot of difference by practising only the four principles, be there, play, make their day and choose your attitude.
I have understood that it is important to be there for the pupils. Being there is not only about being with the pupils physically, but mentally as well. Teacher needs to be there, understand the pupils' needs and feelings, only then the teacher is being there with the pupils. Play is always equal to fun. Well, it would be good if learning is done while having fun. In this way, pupils should be able to accept the knowledge better. Besides, making the pupils' day is very important. Sometimes, teacher can come out with some interesting activities, which could help the pupils to learn, have fun and feel good. Teacher could also praise the pupils for behaving well in the class, or doing good in certain test or exercises. This means a lot to the pupils, and making their day in this way can get the pupils all motivated to move on in learning. Lastly, it's choose your attitude. Everyone chooses their attitude everyday, either consciously or subconsciously. Like Prof had said in the class, there are even some hidden philosophy behind the act of choosing underwear everyday before we go out! Hence, while teaching, it is important for the teachers to choose their attitude. If the the teachers choose to start their day with positive attitude, things would turn our to be good. The positive atmosphere would surely "infect" the pupils too. In that way, both teachers and the pupils feel good and the classroom would be a lively one to be in!
I would definitely take note of this philosophy, and always remind myself to try applying it in life. :)

Assignment 3- Done

Ahhh.. Another assignment done. The feeling of handing in the an assignment is great! haha, at least i enjoy that, to certain extend, i am quite sure, many out there enjoy that too :) I think that's the reason most had chosen to hand in the assignment before Raya?
Again, I would say, it was not easy to complete this assignment. Nothing in this world is easy anyway. When we want something, of course we have to work for it. Just the way everyone in the world works everyday to make dreams a reality?
I think the biggest problem that I faced was that I was undecided all the time. All the while I had been going online to look for ideas on what to be done for my activity. I surfed around looking for animations, thinking that an activity with some moving animations should be nice. Not long later, my attention switched to somewhere else, looking for videos to be put for my activity. I guess this proves that i am not a well disciplined person. This attitude is actually not good for students. Not only not good, I think it's a big BAD BAD for myself. This kind of attitude always get me nowhere but last minute works.
On the other hand, overall I am quite happy with this assignment, as it is suitable and relevant to what we are doing. I learned a lot about Smart Board Software. Because of this assignment I got to sit down and play with the software. Even myself as an adult find it interesting, then the kids should find it amazing! :) And I believe that this would help them learn as their interest is sustained.

Presentation of Assignment 3

For the preparation of this presentation, all the group members gathered in order to choose the best product to be presented. We did look through everyone's product and give some comments to each others. In the end, the whole group agreed to present my product in the class.
I was too nervous standing in front of the class to present my work. Of course, presentation is nothing new to me, as i have presented many times for class presentations, oral presentations and stuffs like that. However, since it was the first time for me to present in front of Prof, I went extraordinary nervous!
Well, I did finish presenting my product to the class. Thanks to Prof and other tutors, they had given me a lot of comments where I can improve my my product more. For instance, knowing that the background of my draft was rather plain for the primary Year 2 pupils, i cracked my head on what to put for the background. I thought it would be nice to use some cartoon wallpapers as the background thinking that children love cartoons and fantasies. However, after being questioned, only I realized that there were not meaningful and they do not help in learning. This is something that I need to work on. I would go and surf some website to see the layout of the interactive websites and try to get some inspiration.
Another weakness of my product was the font. Initially I thought it was OK if the font size that appears on the laptop screen is small because I thought they would appear larger when projected to the SmartBoard. Obviously I was wrong because even after being projected, the font size was still very small. Hence, it was very unclear for those who sat at the back. For this, Prof had suggested me to increase the font size and make only limited input on each slide. I would take note of this and improve my product.
Prof too reminded me of a quite imprtant matter regarding the immediate feedback to the pupils. Due to some technical matters, I could only design limited immediate feedback to the pupils for the wrong answer, which is sound. The idea of the importance of positive feedback did not come to my mind at all. Hence, Prof had given me a very great reminder that more positive feedback should be given to the pupils for motivation purposes.
Those above mentioned issues are the major problems of my product. I hope other friends would not make the same mistake as mine.

Assignment 3- On the way...

We are given a few weeks to think of and to design the activities by using the SmartBoard Software. My primary concern is, "How am I going to make an INTERACTIVE set of activities by using SmartBoard Software?" The keyword here is interactive. Well, how to make it interactive? Interactive in terms of the ability of the activity in getting the pupils to communicate with each others? Or is it the ability of the activity in getting the pupils to communicate with the teacher? Or was it the ability of the activity in getting the pupils to communicate with the knowledge?

To me, the last ability is the most appropriate one to be taken, because the word "interactive" here, in the SmartBoard case, is the ability of the teaching aid, (here, the teaching aids refers to SmartBoard) in arousing the pupils' interest so that they would start interact with the teaching aid directly, and in fact, with the knowledge indirectly and subconsciously. I shall justify my personal opinion. Taking the old methods of teaching as example, other teaching aids too are able to make the pupils learn, for instance, flash cards. However, word cards are not as lively as those words presented on SmartBoard. On SmartBoard, electronic flash cards can be done. For instance, teachers can design some flash cards by using the animations. In this case, take a look at the occupation. If we are to compare, an animated doctor which moves is definitely better than a picture of doctor on a flash card. Besides, sounds can be inserted to the electronic flash cards too. Pupils can repeat after the sounds and learn better and more INTERACTIVELY.

I hope my point is clear, on the "interactive" matter. It is when the pupils are engaged with the learning activities actively, only then they are able to learn interactively.

Assignment 3 - How?

Very quickly after submitting the Assignment 2, we were given Assignment 3. In the same group of 5, each of us have to design at least 5 slides by using SmartBoard Software. Each group must choose the best product to be presented in the class.
It was even a tough job to actually choose a topic. Our group drew lots in order to decide on the topic to be done. What I got was "Occupation". I started off by looking for some examples on designing activity by using Smart Board, hoping that I might get some inspiration from them. I am not a very creative person myself, actually I was a little afraid of writing a lesson plan. Each time when I write my lesson plan I would have to keep thinking and brainstorming for ideas, at least for a few hours. Hence, I thought that searching for some example activities is necessary. I hoped that I could actually look at how others design and learn from the good ones.

Here is where I search for examples:
http://education.smarttech.com/ste/en-US/Ed+Resource/

Creating Hyperlinks

As I go along doing the Assignment 3, I had been trying to find some resources on demonstrations on how to use SmartBoard fuctions.

Here, I want to share a video on how to create hyperlinks in SmartBoard presentation. Below is my reflection.

It is stated that there are three approaches to the ways of using ICT. It is very obvious that our classes and lectures are preparing us towards those three approaches. We are now learning about ICT so that we can conduct teaching and learning in the class with the support of ICT and then later the pupils will be able to learn in new ways.

ICT is too integrated to the principles of learning. In choosing the ICT tools to be used in classroom, we must look into the principles stated. Curiosity is a good motivation for the pupils to learn. There is a need for the teacher to give space to the pupils to enable them to explore and learn in order to fulfil their curiosity. With the help of ICT, pupils are able to manage their own learning, develop themselves towards independent learners. By using ICT as well, pupils can easily access the acquired skills for revision purpose.

Assignment 2 - Done

Finally I found some time to update my blog. Eventually I had been very busy with assignments, personal affair, and stuffs like that. Fortunately I finished my assignment successfully and submitted it on time.

No doubt, this assignment had given me enough of tension and sleepless nights. It was quite a complicated task, well, to me, it was. I knew it right from the beginning, it was not easy at all to create my own video. Even though I tried my best to come out with my first video (and hopefully the last one) very early from the due date, due to my carelessness, the video had a lot of weaknesses and there was quite a number of things needed to be edited. That made me decided to come out with another video. Hence, procrastinating still could not be avoided at last.

Again, I would like to thank the professor and tutors for the valuable advices given. Thank you Professor, for reminding me things that I had never thought of, which was the confusion that might be created due to the inappropriate choice of words used. Credit to Miss Ng and Mr Hafiz too, for giving me the permission to make appointment in order to show my second draft. When I reached there, they were so helpful and polite. Being willing to look at my draft AGAIN, that helped me a lot. Knowing that I was on the right track at all, I regained my confidence so that I could continue working on my product.

Besides the professor and tutors, those behind the curtain too could not be forgotten. I appreciate help from my friend, Emil Chin, who gave me the idea on how and the technique on shooting the video. She had guided me through, from the planning of the shooting, to the editing and brushing up of the video clip. Thank you for being there for me. :) Thanks to my group members, for giving me suggestions too. From your words, I knew where else to improve in order to brush up my work. Besides, thank you for being willing to watch my draft again and again. That was a great help for me too, as there were many things that I could not realize on my own.

From this assignment, I learned that planning is very important. For the first video, without really looking at everything as a whole, I just shot something that I wanted and I thought that was the real thing that I needed. Until Professor questioned me, and until the tutors asked me a lot of questions, it was like a knock on my head. Only then I realized that I had gone off track to certain extent. Hence I learned Without good plan and thorough analysis and looking through the assignment again and again, I would most likely go onto the wrong track. Hence, next time, before starting doing my assignment, I would plan things properly so to prevent repeated job and last minute work. Hence, I would not need to suffer throughout the whole night due to the failure of uploading the video on ADEC.
As the saying says, whatever that doesn't kill me makes me stronger. I hope that I would improve myself after this assignment. I hope for the best.

Smart Board Training

After handing in the Assignment 2, even though it was very obvious that everyone had become a dead fish, we still had to attend a session of training conducted by Fenny. The training is about the use and function of the latest version of SmartBoard, which serves as the continuum of the one training that we had during the days when we were still in the college. It was like so long time ago, when we had to come to the university for a day in order to attend the training. Well, now we are here for the second one.

In the class, I realized that Fenny had been very professional in briefing us on what is new with SmartBoard. Although all of us were very tired and could hardly pay attention due to the hard work the night before to finish the assignment, Fenny had been very understanding and carried on with the training with great patience. Cheers, Fenny! Thank you very much, and I seriously appreciate that.

After updating ourselves with the latest knowledge about Smart Board, we had to sit in groups and design a SmartBoard activity. All of us sat down and cracked our head to come out with activity. I feel very bad as in all that in my mind was to finish everything fast and to go home as soon as possible to rest.

Then, we had to present out work in the class. Every group had done a great job and come out with interesting and creative activity. Cheers to everybody for still being able to create such good activities under such condition whereby everyone was almost exhausted!

From this session, I had learned quite a great deal of skills on using the SmartBoard. Thanks to Fenny on that. She had done a good job in preparing the trainning. She is very well equiped with the knowledge and skill, and she is just fantastic. Now, looking at Assignment 3, I found the skills learned are very useful. :) I hope SmartBoard and I can become good friends too!

Assignment 2 - The hard times

The day before the submission, my group members gathered in the college to have a final glance and touch up on each others' assignment. We viewed each other's videos and gave comments. Besides, my friend, who learned the basics of video making, too commented on my video. From there I could tell that my product had gone through many times of viewing and editing.

Finally, until it was midnight, I had done my video. I thought the making of video was hard, yet I did not know that the worst part of the assignment was waiting for me ahead. I started to try uploading my video at around 1am in the morning, but I found that I could not upload my video at all. One of my house mate who is also my group member was facing the same problem too!

Since it was a group work, I was worried that the failure of uploading my video would give trouble to the whole group. Hence, I had no choice but to stay up whole night and keep trying to upload the video. I opened a few browser with a few tabs on each of them, tried my best to upload the video. All the pages were failed to be loaded. I tried for uncounted times, until in the morning I decided not to go to class, stay at home to upload the video.

It was very lucky of us seeing Miss Ng's reply saying that it was ok if we could not upload the video as we could hand in the hard copy first. By then, we rushed to the class and finally we were late for class for almost an hour.

Personally I feel that this is the worst part of this assignment. The weaknesses found in the video which had to cost me a redoing, I see it as a process of learning. But the experience of uploading the video had seriously given me a bad time.

Progress on Assignment 2.. Tough. Tough. Tough.

Recently I am working on Assignment 2. For this assignment, we have to design a video as the final production. From the instructions given, I understood that we can choose to design either the first type of video, which the pupils can watch the video interactively and learn something from it; and the second type of video, which is the video of showing sample activities to be done by the pupils.

Apparently everything tends to go back to creativity in the end. Not only creativity, "purpose" is another important factor. Not only we have to be creative, but everything that we do must serve some purposes. Yeah, anyone can come out with a material. As long as it is someone who is able to hold the camera and shoot something, that someone can be a film director. That someone can actually come out with a video! But, do the videos really serve a purpose?

Well, it is not an easy job to make a "purposeful" video. We have to consider everything, from A to Z. We have to come out with topics which are suitable to the pupils' learning, relevant and meaningful content, things or aspects in the video that is suitable and effective in sustaining the pupils' interest, and many more. We have to look at things from several aspects, and make sure that the video satisfies as many aspects as possible. Besides being suitable, the video too has to be creative, in a way that the pupils will be attracted to their video so that they do not feel bored watching and then learn something from it.

From zero knowledge, I had to learn all the basics on editing video. For instance, which is the software to be used, how do we split, cut, and put video clips together, how do we insert the transitions and effects into the video, how much of transitions and effects would affect the viewers and the audience of the video, and so on. Those are things that an educational video producer should look into and take care of.
There are quite a lot of preparation and planning to be done. From planning the storyline and drawing the storyboard to the production of my first draft, I had gone through some hard times. Being a dummy in technology, there were very much things that I had to learn. I had to search the internet hoping that I might be able to get some tutorials online, and even went around to ask my friends who knew how to make a video.

Finally, after a series of hard work and sleepless nights, I came out with my first draft. After showing my draft, the professor and tutors found many weaknesses on the video, for instance, wrong choice of words used, wrong venue of shooting the video, and some other physical factors like lighting. I was very happy that they were willing to look into my video and to give me some comments and suggestions on ways to improve. Thanks to the professor and tutors.

Yet, no worries, I will take it as an opportunity to learn, and then I will try to improve myself and my work better. :D

I will try to be strong :D

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://worldoutofthebox.blogspot.com/2008/07/progress-on-assignment-2-tough-tough.html' title='Progress on Assignment 2.. A necessity?

Is technology a necessity in a primary classroom? Well, undoubtedly, technology is important and yet very handy to be used in classroom. For instance, we can now use PowerPoint Presentation when we want to do presentation in the class. This saves a lot of time on preparing and it's easy to be brought to school when we only need to bring a thumb drive.

However, I came across an article earlier, which I think it gave me some ideas on choosing methods and teaching aids to be used in the classroom. I think that the points are quite true to certain extent. Yes, technology is very well developed and everyone can be benefited out of it if it is used appropriately. But, the point here is, should we put aside the traditional method?

I do agree with the author saying that we should not just neglect the traditional methods. No matter how good and handy technology is, children still need to read and write using the traditional way. Children must be introduced to handwriting teachers can inculcate the habit of reading books within their pupils. Or else, our future generation might not be able to write and hands, the worse is that they might not even know what a BOOK is!

The author too mentioned on the appropriateness in using technology in the class teaching different subjects and topics. I think the author is right that teachers have to carefully choose the topics when they are to teach with technology. Of course they are certain topics that are better taught using the traditional way. For instance, the teaching of adjectives using 5 senses. The computer is not able to teach the pupils what is the meaning of "soft" until they touch the real object which is soft, in real life. Instead of trying to use technology to teach the word, it would be more useful for the teachers brings relia into the classroom. By using realia, pupils could feel a soft object, and then truly understand what is the meaning of the word.

Hence, we teachers have to be careful on choosing the appropriate methods to be used while teaching. Then, only optimal learning can be achieved.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://worldoutofthebox.blogspot.com/2008/07/technology-in-primary-classroom.html' title='Technology in Primary Classroom.. ANYONE OR EVERYONE?

Undoubtedly, technology has become a very important part of our lives. For instance, things are just one click away from us via the use of internet. To me, it seems like it whereby people nowadays cannot live without TECHNOLOGY. Take the nearest example, my mother, watching drama series has become her daily routine after work. Hence, I think television is the greatest contribution from technology to her in terms of entertainment. No one can reject technology, not my mother, not the workers, not we as future teachers, it is just the same when it comes to students.

I am going to answer the two questions by looking into the subject matter by referring to the Malaysian society. In fact, technology has influenced the education field to certain extent. Take a look at the schools, schools are adapting themselves to the advancement of technology. From my experience during the 12 day School Experience Program (which was a compulsory subject for us last semester), the school that I went to, Sekolah Kebangsaan Yaakob Latiff 1, has shown it's effort in adapting technology into their school. How? Even though their school contains only around 400 pupils, they have a computer lab with good facilities. I think it would not be wrong to say that there is no way for the students to reject the technology.

Of course, the technology has influenced a lot on the way the students are going to learn. But how? Let's look at the nearest example again, the teacher trainees like us. Since the first day that we entered the college (teacher training college), we were exposed to quite a great deal of technology. Examples? The PowerPoint Presentation, the use of LCD, the way to integrate ICT into our lesson planning.. All those have got to do with technologies. The purpose? Of course, to train us so that we will be able to use technology to teach! Hence, when we try to apply those in our teaching in classroom, of course the students are going to learn with technology.

Well, besides the exposure to technology in learning via the teachers, technology too affects the students in other ways too. Again, how? Through the home access! Nowadays, internet access has become very common in families. Not all, but many families have got themselves internet access at home, and the number of family with internet access is increasing. With internet access, students are going to learn, not only in schools, but also at home. When students are able to access to the internet at home, with proper guidance from the parents, they should be able to learn new things via the internet. Here, this is where the parents should play their role in guiding and involving themselves in the use of internet by their children to make sure that they are surfing only the websites which contain the proper content that is suitable for children. Besides, there are a lot of educational channels on television nowadays whereby the children are able to watch some educational videos or programs. For instance, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel are some of the good channels that the children can watch in order to gain new knowledge. Therefore, students nowadays are learning at home too, of course with the help of technology.

With reference to the second question for discussion, how I as a teacher will be learning? Well, as far as i know and agree, learning is a life long process. In my opinion, no one can proudly say that he or she has known everything and he or she does not need to learn. Learning has got to be something that we should do, from the first day we were born until the day we die. Therefore, as a teacher, I think I should constantly update myself with the latest knowledge or information from time to time, in the past when i was still in school, in the present, when i am studying in university as a student teacher, and in the future, when i will be working as a teacher. That's how I am going to learn. Now, the question is, HOW am i going to achieve that? Bingo! The answer is via technology. For instance, I can learn new things through surfing the internet, watching the television, and even through listening to radio. Through internet, I will be able to learn some new ideas that I can use in teaching, or perhaps some new theories developed that I can take as references in my career as a teacher. I can also surf the internet to refer to something that I am not sure. The information is easily reached at the finger tips. Through the internet, I would be able to get some chances to interact with other teachers from all over the country and even the teachers from all over the world. By interacting with them, we would be able to exchange our ideas or opinion from time to time and then learn from each others. That's marvelous, isn't that?

This is the end of my discussion regarding the first blog assignment. :D

p/s: I will try to post my opinion if I have something to add on. :)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://worldoutofthebox.blogspot.com/2008/07/reflection-on-next-generation-learning.html' title='NEXT GENERATION LEARNING.. Well, it is exciting to come to UM, finally. However, I know the journey ahead is not easy. To get good grades, I will have to work extra hard as there is no free lunch in the world. I shall go on and see what is waiting ahead of me.

Talking about this course, I hope I can learn something new that I can enrich myself. I named my blogspot "World Out of the Box" because I think in terms of the acceptance of technology in the education line, teachers need to think and go out of the box, so that they can adapt to the technology which is moving with a fast pace and it waits for nobody.

In the class, Prof had brought up the concept of developing SMART teachers, by the word "PLEASE". "Personal Learning and Student Engagement", that's what PLEASE is all about. I had never thought of the word "please" in such way, until I saw the Prof's perception. Well, I see this as the first step of getting out of the box!

Have fun learning!
